Animal Control

1

The City of Peru Animal Control provides for the humane treatment of stray, neglected and abused dogs.

We wish to provide our professional assistance for the health and protection of the residents of Peru.

Our responsibilities include (within the CORPORATE limits of the City of Peru):
  -The enforcement of local and state animal control laws,
  -Removal of deceased animals from the roadways,
  -The humane capture and treatment of unwanted animals,
  -Investigation of animal abuse, neglect, cruelty, 
  -Investigation of animal bites, nuisance animals, unlicensed domestic pets.
  -Maintenance of the shelter facilities, including the dog park located adjacent to the shelter.

TO REPORT A LOOSE DOG: Call DISPATCH at 765-473-5522. They are open 24/7 and will radio the appropriate staff to assist.

You will need to show:

Veterinary information (Name & Number)
Proof of Rabies (Required by the State of Indiana)
Proof of Spay/Neuter (to get the discounted rate).

FEES:
$40.00:  If owner is under 62 and dog is NOT neutered/spayed.

$ 5.00 If owner is under 62 and dog is neutered/spayed.

FREE:  If owner is 62+ and dog is neutered/spayed.
            If dog is a neutered/spayed licensed service animal.

**Dogs under 12 weeks old do not require registration.

Tags can be picked up at City of Peru Animal Care & Control BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. Tags are also available by seeing our friends at Miami County Veterinary Clinic on Logansport Road.

LIMITS:  Residents are allowed 3 dogs per residence in the City of Peru.

DNR/WILDLIFE:  If you need assistance for an orphaned or injured wild animal, please refer to the DNR licensed rehab list: https://www.in.gov/.../orphaned.../wildlife-rehabilitators/

WELFARE CHECKS:  City Ordinance indicates all animals shall have water, shelter, food.  If you feel an animal is not being cared for properly, please reach out to us for a welfare check.  You can do this anonymously. WELFARE CHECK

Building Department

CITY OF PERU BUILDING DEPARTMENT

The City of Peru Building Department ensures properties are constructed and maintained according to building and zoning codes. They are tasked with providing minimum standards for the protection of life, health, environment, public safety and general welfare, and for the conservation of energy in the design and construction of buildings and structures.

The City of Peru Building Department includes the Building, Zoning & Code Enforcement.

The Building Department responsibilities include:

     -Plan and permit application review for new or substantial improvements.

     -Issuing permits for construction, demolition, and occupancy. This includes electrical upgrades, roofing, pools, renovations and new builds.

     -Issue & monitor contractor registrations & licensing. 

     -Investigate unsafe building issues/concerns.

     -Investigates code violations such as substandard properties, grass, trash, derelict vehicles, etc.

City Council

City Council is the legislative and the fiscal body for the City of Peru. Every four years, residents of the city of Peru elect seven members to serve as the “Common Council.”

The council consists of one part-time member from each of five districts plus two "at large" members. A council member is not subject to term limits and may run for re-election as often as they wish.

A council member must have been a resident of the district from which he or she is elected for at least six months before the election, and a resident of the city for at least one year.

The Common Council may pass ordinances, orders, motions, and resolutions for the government of the city of Peru, and they control of the city's property, finances, and the appropriation of money.

The Peru Fire Department has a proud history of serving our community. In 2018, we celebrated our 175th

 Anniversary. It is our honor and privilege to serve the citizens of Peru, and also those visiting our city. 

The Peru Fire Department provides emergency medical, fire, rescue, water rescue, and fire prevention services. We have an ISO rating of 3, and are proud to have maintained that rating. We are always looking for ways to improve our services, and improve safety throughout our department.

Mission Statement 

The mission of the Peru Police Department is to protect the rights of all persons within its jurisdiction to be free from criminal victimization, to be secure in their possessions, and to live in peace. Consistent with the values of a free society, it is the primary objective of the Peru Police Department to approach, as closely as possible, the ideal of a community free from crime and disorder.  

The motto, “Pride in Commitment – Excellence in Service” states the essential philosophical premise for the purpose of the Peru Police Department. The Department, through its employees, is proudly committed to providing professional law enforcement services to our community and invites a standard of excellence by which to be measured in the fulfillment of its promise to perform its police functions in a fair, responsive and professional manner.

Traffic Department

The Traffic Department is responsible for the installation and upkeep of all traffic signage on public roads within the city limits. The department does all of the pavement markings throughout the city. They also handle all road closures for public events. Tree limbs or bushes obstructing view at intersections or blocking traffic signs are also removed by this dept.

Feel free to contact our dept in these areas of concern and drive safe and be mindful of our presence on the city streets.

Street & Sanitation Department

The Street & Sanitation Department maintains the City's streets and alleys & garbage pickup and brush cleanup. The department's specific functions include street resurfacing, repair and construction, garbage pickup, snow removal, street sweeping, leaf collection and removal of trees in the tree lawn. 

You may also rent dump trucks for personal use through the Street Department. Please call 765-472-2501 for more info.
